Class Objective

    The objective of this three credit hour classroom / lab experience is to give students the basic understanding the role fiber optics possesses within the telecommunications, data and media industries and to introduce associated fiber optic technical skills. Students will learn the basic concepts behind light, optics and fiber technology. They will learn fiber’s history, and how it is manufactured. Current driving and receiving devices will be studied in addition to various data formats. The student will be offered hands-on experience in technical methods of configuration and installation, including network design, cable selection, splicing, termination, and performance analysis. The completion of this course will prepare each student for passing the FOI exam administered by the Electronics Technician Association.
